New project proposals, progress, and outcomes of Japanese Funds-in-Trust (JFIT) projects were discussed between Government of Japan and UNESCO.
Discussion in JFIT Annual Review Meeting
On 24 September 2018, representatives from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (MEXT) and UNESCO held the Annual Review Meeting of “Japanese Funds-in-Trust (JFIT) for Scientific Programmes on Global Challenges in Asia and the Pacific Region”. The meeting reviewed the progress and outcome of seven projects, and discussed new project proposals in three areas of focus.
Highlights of the discussion included, continuous effort on enhancing synergies, fostering cooperation among science network, UNESCO, and other UN agencies, utilizing JFIT legacy. Participants reaffirmed the catalytic role of JFIT in contribution towards SDGs and 2030 Agenda.
Concluded by Mr. Shahbaz Khan, Director and Representative of UNESCO Jakarta, and Ms. Eri Hata, Assistant Director-General for International Affairs of MEXT/ Assistant Secretary-General of the Japanese National Commission for UNESCO, participants from MEXT, UNESCO Jakarta, IOC/WESTPAC Secretariat, and the relevant divisions from UNESCO Headquarters agreed to keep working closely for further project development.
Site Visit for UNESCO Scientific Partner Organizations
Representatives from MEXT visited three UNESCO scientific partner institutions around Jakarta on the next day. First, in Asia Pacific Center for Ecohydrology (APCE), Mr. Iignasius D.A. Sutapa (Executive Director) provided introduction of the activities and short visit of mini ecohydrology demo-site. Second, the group visited Oceanography Research Centre of Indonesian institute of sciences (LIPI), and Mr. Dirhamsyah (Director) introduced current strategy and research activities of the laboratories. Finally, in Indian Ocean Tsunami Information Center (IOTIC) in Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG), the visitors saw Tsunami early warning systems and relevant training materials with explanation from Mr Ardito Kodijat (Head of Indian Ocean Tsunami Information Centre, IOC-UNESCO) from UNESCO Jakarta.
What is JFIT for Scientific Programmes
UNESCO has enjoyed a long-standing and solid cooperation with the Government of Japan through the JFIT since 1969. Among the various series of JFIT covering all the fields of UNESCO, MEXT has been supporting the Natural Sciences activities in Asia and the Pacific region for more than 40 years. UNESCO Jakarta hosts the annual review meeting as a manager of this JFIT.
